Position Summary
The Special Needs Coordinator will act as the liaison between those with unique needs and gifts and the church family. The Coordinator will serve to empower those individuals and to equip the body of Christ to include them.
Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications
• Possesses and practices a strong Christian faith
• Possesses a calling to help children with special needs to be included in all aspects of church life and to grow in their understanding of God’s love
• Ability to network with a large number of people
• Ability to recruit volunteer staff according to their gifts and passions
• Possesses a growing understanding of a wide range of disabilities
• Possesses a developing understanding of techniques for working with children and adults with disabilities
• Knowledge of where and how to obtain additional information and support and the ability to seek out the same for new situations.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with care, in both written and verbal forms
• Pass all background checks
• Can be chaotic and loud at times
• Necessitates dealing with multiple tasks at once
• Potential issues with sick and injured children
Physical Requirements
• Able to lift items of at least 30 pounds
• Repeated lifting and bending
• Able to be on your feet for long periods of time
Relationships
• Reports to the Executive Pastor
• Participates in the Children’s Ministry and Student Ministry Area meetings
• Growing in relationship with Christ by regularly attending Worship and pursuing personal growth in Christ.
• Grows relationships with other church members through participation in church events such as small groups, Church Picnic, retreats and, All Church Camp. Attending these events is not mandatory but strongly recommended.
Essential Functions
• Recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work alongside children with special needs
• Identify and/or contact those individuals/families with disabilities who would benefit from an
Inclusion Action Plan. Interview parents to find best Buddy fit for a participant.
• Develop an Inclusion Action Plan for each individual with disabilities that will allow him/her to be more fully involved in the body of Christ.
• Share information about an individual with a disability with appropriate leaders, peers, or entire church family as deemed needed and with permission.
• Offer information and training to leaders, peers, and the entire church family so that they may better include persons with disabilities.
• Be an advocate for those with disabilities in the church.
• Maintain close contact with volunteers as well as the individuals/families receiving support.
• Supplemental training for additional volunteers related to special needs inclusion
• Possible development of programs (environment options such as inclusion vs separate environment, support groups, VBS, special events, Wednesday and Sunday service plans, etc).
• Development of inclusion programs (environment options such as inclusion vs separate environment, support groups, camps, VBS, special events, Wednesday and Sunday service plans, etc).
• Overseeing budget of special needs ministry
• Parent/child communication (phone messages, email correspondence, website communication, social media)
• Media publicity inside the church and in the community
• Volunteer recruitment, appreciation, training, management, and scheduling
• Supplemental training for small and large group leaders related to special needs inclusion
• Wednesday and Sunday service planning for self-contained special needs environment (worship, modified large group lesson, modified small group lesson, and application activity)
• Attend weekly meetings with pastoral leaders of other Family Ministry areas
• Meet with parents/children as needed for ministry opportunities
• Local missions support (i.e. connecting with group homes for adults, attending community events, attending outreach events to support any special needs families)
• Lead and develop youth and adult volunteers in their spiritual and functional gifts
• Complete background checks on existing volunteers every 6 months. Report any concerns to Senior Leadership.
